Brinkmann - Go Grill Charcoal Grill, Black (810-5350-0) Review

Brinkmann - Go Grill Charcoal Grill, Black

This grill is really nothing more than the charcoal pan from the more expensive Brinkman "Gourmet" smoker. The gourmet smoker can grill or smoke, and I've used this numerous times to grill. We find it to be just large enough to grill for our family of 4.The coal pan is pretty heavy gauge metal. The outer pan with the feet is thinner, but doesn't get too hot.You may want to consider buying the Gourmet instead. If you buy it at a home center, for about 1/3 more in price, you get a whole smoker.Either way, it's rugged, and small enough to take anywhere.

Dimplex PowerChef Convertible #CBQ-120-ELESTAND Electric Grill with Stand, Black/Silver Review

Dimplex PowerChef Convertible #CBQ-120-ELESTAND Electric Grill with Stand, Black/Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My video review will follow the assembly stages and my first use of the Dimplex PowerChef Convertible Electric Grill, but it's here that I will let you know what I really think.

Delivery - Buyers should be made aware that this will most likely ship via a freight company. Now while it's nice that the driver will carry it through the front door, it does require them to arrange a "time frame" for delivery. Mine was 8:00am - 12:00pm and of course it was delivered at 11:56am. For anyone on a 9-5 work schedule it's a bit inconvenient, but with the size of the boxes it's understandable.

Unpacking & Assembly - It comes in 2 large boxes. (See my customer image) Both the stand and grill are securely packed with plenty of styrofoam and can be easily removed from their boxes. Tools required for assembly are an allen wrench, small flat wrench (both included) and I recommend a power screwdriver if you have one, although a standard phillips will work. I am very comfortable putting furniture, toys, etc. together and was able to put the stand and grill together in less than 30 minutes.

Use - You have two options for cooking: A pre-programmed setting based on what you will be cooking or manual setting. My first time using it I chose a pre-programmed setting for pork, which worked very well and since then I've also used the manual setting which produced results just the same. After several uses now, my preference is the pre-programmed settings. It just makes grilling a no brainer and allows you to focus on guests or family instead of checking on it constantly. Not only does it preheat the grill, it tells you when to add and turn the meat over and then when it's done. My first night I cooked a marinated pork loin that came out juicy and not at all over cooked. (See my customer image) As a precaution I did use a meat thermometer to check for doneness and it was spot on. As for the taste, it was no different than if I had cooked on my gas grill. Additionally burgers and ribs have been just as delicious.

Clean Up - Before my first use I lined the drip pan with foil to help with clean up.This was the easiest thing to do and I continue to do it each time I feel it needs to be changed. As for the grilling grates, I made one mistake my first use.As with most grills you should oil it down before placing your food on it for the first few times to "season" it. I didn't do this and not only did the pork stick, but it left me a terrible mess to clean. I think it took about 30-45 minutes for me to thoroughly clean it off to my satisfaction. Since then I have oiled it well with vegetable oil before grilling and the meat is no longer sticking.

Overall - I have to admit that I like my gas grill. Preheat time is about the same and clean up is no different than the PowerChef. But where this grill sells me is on the fact that it's always ready (No running out of propane), timed cooking (No need to hover) and it's portable. We can easily remove the grill from the stand, put it in the back of the truck or even in a trunk and take it with us - of course you will need an electrical outlet! Will I be giving up my gas grill? Not yet, but it's not because I don't like the PowerChef.I live in the Pacific Northwest where we have lots of moisture and per the "Important Instructions #13 - Never use an electric grill in the rain, sleet or snow". So while this grill will definitely be our summer grill, it will probably have to go to the garage during fall, winter and spring. For anyone in a dry climate, this will be perfect for you year round!

Old Smokey Charcoal Grill #18 (Medium) Review

Old Smokey Charcoal Grill #18
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had my smokey for two years and have grilled everything from burgers to briskets and whole chickens. My neighbors' Webers collect dust in their garages-most of them have gone to gas-but I've stayed loyal to lump charcoal and think this is hands down one of the best charcoal grills you can get for the money. The grilling surface is ample--you could even do a few racks of ribs if you roll them and sent them on their ends. Like the Weber, PK, and Holland grills, Old Smokey has a small cult following. And, for good reason. The design provides the versatility to use either direct or indirect heat, so Old Smokey functions as both a grill and smoker. The 18 inch diameter grill is perfect for a small family, but if I could do it over I'd just go for the 22 inch model so I could cook for a larger crowd. You should spring for the leg extensions, otherwise the grill won't stand waist high and you'll do a lot of bending over or squatting to tend to your 'cue. Reserve the shorter legs that come with it for camping outings. As for aesthetics, I think the Old Smokey has a lot of character. It's a great conversation piece, and, unless you live in Texas, you'll be one of the only folks on your block to have one! It's a fantastic little grill for the money. The only drawback I've found is that the simple design makes it hard to add charcoal. Unlike the PK, the grill is one piece, so you have to remove the meat and grill to add more charcoal.A slight hassle, perhaps, but for a product priced at around $50, you really can't complain. If you are one of those folks who thinks, "they sure don't make things like they used to" then the Old Smokey is for you. Check out the company's web site. This is an American product made by folks whose product integrity has stood the test of time.

Bodum Fyrkat 13.4-Inch Portable Charcoal Grill Review

Bodum Fyrkat 13.4 inch Portable Charcoal Grill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Bodum Frykat 13.4 Inch Portable Charcoal Grill is a handy little grill for those who don't have the space for a larger grill, or who want a portable grill you can take along just about anywhere. It's small enough to take along and use wherever, but large enough to cook a fair amount at a time. This is more for the family going on a picnic or cooking a couple burgers and hot dogs quickly in the back yard or on the deck, not for hosting a large party.(It is big enough to cook a couple steaks too)

I have the orange model, which my little girl really likes because she likes orange. However, it does come in green, yellow, black, blue and off-white.Personally, I'd probably go with the black model if it was just me, but it is nice that they have the colors for those that want the variety. Most important thing is that it cooks, and that it does.

There is a small tray and grate that fits in the bottom to place your charcoal on top of, and then there is the larger grill that fits on top.The unit is not very deep, so you won't be placing a lot of charcoal in it.Again, this is for cooking small meals, and it works just fine for that. The legs are sturdy enough.I placed mine on the concrete beside our back door and it was fine. The directions to state that the unit is not intended to be used on top of tables.

There is a handle on top of the lid that is rubber covered so it does not get hot when on the grill.I had no issues with taking the cover off to turn our meat or retrieve it when it was done. There are two air vents right under the handle, and you close those by turning the handle. There are also three rubber clips on the side. These are for transporting the unit when not in use. These clips clamp the lid to the rest of the unit and you can then pick up the entire grill by the convenient handle on top and take the grill with you wherever you go.You don't want to do this unless it is cool of course.

If you are looking for a small charcoal grill due to lack of space, or need a smaller spare for taking with you, the Bodum Frykat 13.4 Inch Portable Charcoal Grill is a good little unit that does the trick. It is a bit more expensive than some of the models you can find, but it is nicer in a couple ways than some of the cheaper ones I've seen too.I like cooking with it, my little girl likes the color, and I'm sure it will be a nice, handy, little grill for many lunches, dinners, and picnics.

HotSpot Notebook Portable Charcoal Grill Review

HotSpot Notebook Portable Charcoal Grill
Average Reviews:

The Good:

I bought this grill for this summers motorcycle camping adventures.I can't think of a better use for this grill.Narrower main body section gives many options for tying down, and on my bike (a shadow 750) the bottom "foot hole" was able to go over and around my sissy bar and sit on my rack.Pretty sweet.2 up camping now comes with a BBQ!

The Bad (at least for motorcycle camping):

It is a bit flimsy (but quite stable when open for grilling). With care, I am expecting to get about 50 or so BBQs out of it.After it falls apart I am planning to go to a metal shop in town and have it re-fabricated in some heaver gauge steel.I would be willing to have a little heaver (and smaller) grill for motorcycle camping if it was durable. The grilling surface is large.Expect to need about 3 pounds of charcoal to get it going well, 6 pounds (an entire small bag) of charcoal for a full grill to feed 4+ people. This makes it a requirement to setup camp, and then ride out to get groceries and charcoal.Messy.

I've BBQ'd for years and have to say the "action" on this grill is quite good.If you really have a need for an extremely portable grill, I would definitely recommend it.If you are just looking for a smaller grill for car camping or porch cookouts I would recommend the more traditional Coleman and Weber portable grills with a lid and better durability.

Weber 516002 Q 120 Gas Grill Review

Weber 516002 Q 120 Gas Grill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Weber Q120 is a fantastic little grill. As a vegetarian, I wasn't sure just how much I'd actually use a grill, and didn't want to BBQ on something that felt unstable or flimsy... well... I've had the grill for almost a month now and I think I've only missed grilling 2 of those days.

Veggie kabobs are a breeze (it holds 6 perfectly) as are bocaburgers, tofurkey beer brats, and jumbo dogs.I'm sure for my carniverous friends, it would work equally well.

I'm loving it so much I just ordered a cookbook today for vegetarian grilling so that I can expand my repetoire (sic).

Best Features:
- easy to put together
- cast iron grate
- shape/size
- fantastic electric starter that doesn't have an 'explosive' start to it

It is worth the price... I think it will last a good long time.
