Meco Swinger Charcoal Grill, Black Review

Thought it might be helpful to break down this review into the good, the indifferent, and the bad.I'm pretty sure it would apply to other Meco series 4100 series grills as well.

Good:The adjustable grate heights in combination with the generous vent options and tight fitting lid produce the ability to control your cooking better than in any charcoal grill I've ever had or used. In that regard it almost rivals a Weber gas grill I once had.Add the charcoal taste and I would as soon eat food cooked in it as that cooked in the Weber. For example, last night I cooked 3 lamb cutlets.Started with the grid in the hot position and all vents open to sear in juices and give the meat an attractive, crusty appearance. Then, moved grid to medium position to cook further.Did the same for the other side. When finished, closed the vents and cover. At least, with my grill, this really does put out the charcoals rather quickly. After they cool, I put them in a covered can and add them to new coals next time..For quick cooking meals like steaks, this reduces total charcoal use by maybe as much as half.Although not an exact science, the ability to tilt the grill does help me cook steaks rare and medium in the same time.I sear all steaks on hot for about 90 seconds and then, if the coals are good and hot, usually tilt the grill to medium on one end and cool on the other end for 3 minutes or so.After doing the other side the same way, one is about medium rare and the other about medium.I've cooked some chicken successfully using the indirect method. However, the space left for cooking this way is certainly not abundant. My overall rating as to cooking quality is 5 stars plus.

Indifferent:Quality of most materials in the grill are probably just above average. The grate, grid, and tilting mechanism (the guts of the system) are probably slightly better than that. The folding table is much worse. My overall rating for quality of materials in this price range is 4 stars.

Bad:Being pretty old now, I've probably assembled say 8 or more charcoal and gas grills. At a good 2+ hours this one took easily twice as long as any of the others.I ascribe that to the number of things to be assembled and, even more so, to the poor instructions.Since assembly is fairly complicated, Meco could help us a lot if they would pre assemble at least the top and bowl parts and ship in a slightly larger box. Failing that there certainly must be a way to more clearly picture and define each step.Lastly, some things are just hard. For example, just screwing the wood screws into the table assembly requires prodigious effort.Suggest you keep an electric drill handy for this step.My overall rating of ease of assembly is 1 star. That said, this gripe will undoubtedly fade even more into distant memory as more fun to cook and tasty meals come off the grill.

Overall.Once you get this grill assembled I believe you will really like it.

Char-Griller 5050 Duo Gas-and-Charcoal Grill Review

Ok, so this is for the grill, NOT the price. Amazon's price on this item is WAY too high but that isn't what the review is for... I got mine at a sporting goods store for under $250 so shop around.

This is a fantastic grill, it is really versitile.

Pros:
- Allows you to cook with charcoal, gas, or smoke (with the optional side firebox)
- The 3 burners on the gas side are close to the cooking surface which makes it really easy to control the cooking temperature.
- The side firebox somes with cooking grates for grilling 1-2 steaks

Cons:
- The grease pan is difficult to clean
- The ash tray can be cumbersome to remove
- It could really use some better wheels, this is a HEAVY grill if you have the firebox attached and moving it around is tough.
- No option for using natural gas as a fuel source

The Cons are all relatively minor in my opinion. This is a great grill, I'd buy another one for sure.

Char-Griller 1515 Patio Pro Model Grill Review

Char-Griller 1515 Patio Pro Model Grill

I love to BBQ and I have had my 22 ?" Weber Charcoal grill for the last 5 years. The issue was for day to day grilling when I did not have any guest over, the Weber was just a waste of charcoal and time for light cooking.

I wanted something way smaller for my deck for only 1-2 people.Requirement had to be charcoal (of course).I searched around the market for a while and found that Weber and several other manufactures had mini charcoal grills. The issue was that most of them were low to the ground. They were all selling for $20-$30 depending on the brand.I then discovered the Char-Griller Patio Pro.After seeing the build material (cast iron) and the sturdiness of the support frame in which the cooking box sat on top of, I knew this was the product that would meet my expectations.

Delivery:
I ordered the product from Amazon and received it within ~ 4 days. The correct package arrived on time and undamaged, so the ordering experience was perfect.I arrived from work around 7 pm and saw the package at my doorstep and I was excited to grill that night. However, I had read the review of other customers who ordered this grill and I knew assembly was going to be a nightmare.Sure enough, assembling the grill was absolute HELL!!Needless to say, I was not able to grill the day the product arrived.

Assembly:
The grill will arrive with all the pieces for it within the actual grill box.Everything is sticky as it has been coated with oil from the factory, so make sure you assemble your grill in the proper location. The grill has numerous screws and mini pieces which are not clearly identified at all in the instruction manual. The instruction manual is absolutely worthless as its measurements for the pieces are inaccurate and in my particular case, I had less pieces that what the manual said I needed, yet I still assembled the grill without running out of pieces.I will spare you the agonizing details of my assembly experience and summarize it as:Assembling the grill is going to be the ONLY bad experience in owning this product.

USAGE:
With that said, the actual functionality of this grill is EXCELLENT.It is PERFECT for its intended cause...cooking for 1-2 hungry men, or 1-4 average people. The grate is made out of cast iron and requires to be initially coated in vegetable oil over 300 degree fire for 2 hrs (according to the manual).I recommend doing what I did to get the grill ready for use...in order to burn off all the factory oils and "crap," I just filled it to the rim with charcoal and left it to burn...when I came back, all the oil's, crap, and "new stink" disappeared and the cast iron grates were seasoned and ready for use.

The first time I grilled was excellent. The air ventilation system allows for even heat distribution so you can control your fire.Another excellent feature of this product is the cast iron grates...they get so hot and leave an awesome grill mark on your meat...something I could never get with the grate on my Weber.

In addition, the little tray on the side is a HUGE convenience factor when cooking. You can actually put pretty heavy things on it without worrying it will break.During assembly, when I felt the wood material that was used for the tray, I was extremely concerned because I thought when the grill would get hot, they would burn away.So far, this has not been the case, however, time will tell how long they last. But at the present moment, they are perfect. Not shown in Amazon's picture for this product is three little hooks that you have to manually screw into your tray, which will allow you to hang your cooking tools...another cool convenience factor.

Cleaning:
Cleaning is pretty easy too as the charcoal tray box easily slides out and you just dump the ashes into a trash bag.

Overall quality is excellent and I am pleased that the grill does not wobble. In my opinion, aside from the assembly experience, you will not find a better mini charcoal grill with all the features that this grill has [...].
